Meghan Markle surprised everyone last night when she walked onstage to present her friend Clare Waight Keller with the Womenswear Designer of the Year award, and she planned it so well that Clare herself had no idea.
The craziest part is that she and Meghan saw each other as recently as last week, when Clare was fitting her for the dress she wore to the ceremony. That’s when Meghan lied to her about where she was wearing it.
“I was actually fitting her for the dress last week and she said, ‘Oh I’m going to this thing next week, I think it’s Monday or Tuesday night, I have to check my calendar.’ I just did not think anything of it,” Clare said. “Then she walked in!”
Meghan’s speech about Clare was super sweet, and she explained that when people choose to wear a certain designer, they’re choosing to be an extension of their values, which is why she was honored to present Clare with the award.

Meghan Markle（メ―ガン・マークル）は昨夜、ステージに上がり彼女の友人でもあるClare Waight Keller（クレア・ワイト・ケラー）へWomenswearデザイナー賞の授与をしてみんなを驚かせた。しかもメ―ガンは用意周到に計画を練っており、クレアはメ―ガンが来るなど全く知らなかったという。
冗談でいってるんではなくて、本当に完全に純粋にサプライズだったわ。私は今夜彼女が来るなんて全く知らなかったの！
とクレアは今日Graziaに語った。
一番最高なのは、メ―ガンと彼女はごく最近先週あたりに会っていたのだ、しかもメ―ガンが昨夜着た衣装のフィッティングをしているときに。メ―ガンはそのドレスをどこで着るかについてウソをついたのだ。
私は実際に先週あのドレスで彼女にフィッティングしたのよ、そこで彼女は「この衣装は来週に着るとおもうんだけど、多分月曜か木曜日ね。カレンダー見てみなくちゃ！」って。私はただ何もそんな深く考えなかったのよ。それで彼女はあの場で歩いてくるんだから（びっくり）！
とクレアは語った。
メ―ガンのクレアに対するスピーチはすごく素敵なもので、彼女は誰か特定のデザイナーの服を着ることを選ぶときは、彼らの価値の延長となるように選んでいる、だからメ―ガンはクレアにこの賞を授与できることを光栄に思っている、といったものだった。
